California Knows How to Party

So normally we go to Newport with the Milne's every summer, except this year all the "adults" went on an Alaskan cruise, so no vacation for the kiddos.  Well, we weren't about to take that sitting down, so we went on our own Newport vacay.  It was only over night, but it was still fun just to get away for a couple of days and hang out on the beach.  It was just us, Weston, Chelsea, Marisa, and Trent.

We got there on Friday afternoon, grabbed some food and then headed straight for the beach.  We took forever to decide which beach to go to and finally decided on Balboa.  It was perfect!  The beach was practically empty, the sand was really nice and the sun was getting ready to set.  Only Marisa and Trent actually got in the water.  The rest of us, including Tylee, just dipped our toes in.  California beaches are usually a little too cold for our warm blooded desert skin.  We had a delicious dinner at Claim Jumper and then headed back to the hotel to the hot tub until it closed.  Then we ended the night falling asleep watching Olympic coverage (awesome since we don't have cable at home and just have clips on the internet to get our Olympic updates).

Little info about Devan: he typically hates the beach.  He doesn't like the combination of cold and wet and sand and burning sun.  The water is too cold, you get sand everywhere especially after you get in the water, and he burns super easy.  So, after hitting up the Mickey D's across the street for some breakfast, we headed to the local Target to pick of a few "necessities".  We invested in some chairs (to keep him up and out of the sand), an umbrella (to keep him out of the sun), a mini cooler stocked with ice and bev (absolutely necessary if you know anything about Devan), some PB&J's, and some Teddy Grahams (Dev's favorite road trip snack). He had planned ahead and brought a book to read and his iPod so he was set.  Turns out, with the proper equipment, he had a great day!  He even facebook posted it!  He still didn't get in the water, but nobody did (except Marisa and Trent).  By the Newport trip next summer he wants to get some wetsuits so we can have the maximum awesome beach experience by alleviating everything he hates about the beach.

Tylee was a champ and slept for a big chunk of the day.  She liked getting her feet in the water, but didn't really like the sand in her toes.  Unfortunately for her, we discovered that you can still somehow get sunburned even if you are under an umbrella.  Poor thing had a pretty nasty burn on the side of her face that she wasn't sleeping on, with a binky outline and everything.  That night was pretty rough for both me and her (let's just say I don't handle her crying in pain very well.)  But, the next day she looked a whole lot better and aside from some dry peeling skin on her nose, you would never know what happened.

So it was just a quick little trip.  We headed home Saturday afternoon and got there shortly after my parents flew in from Seattle and their Alaskan Cruise.  It will be nice to be able to spend a whole week down there next year with all the family and have Tylee will up and running around...with layers and layers of sunscreen on.
